ASML - the Dutch chip machine manufacturer leader lost their IP and pricing policies in a data breach. The damages caused by Chinese industrial espionage are in the hundreds of millions Euros.
According to the Dutch news site nu.nl and businessinsider.nl (a.o), ASML, the world's largest chip machine manufacturers was exposed to Chinese industrial espionage.
The damages are to be expected in the hundreds of millions of Euros. Loosing your intellectual property can be very costly, loosing your pricing policies and manuals to go along with that means a decreasing number of customers. Loosing customers, deals, facing fiercer competition, that has got to impact big time. That hurts.
Even when ASML's allegedly state sponsored competitor in China (XTAL) was already fined 206 million Euro earlier in 2018 for snatching away ASML's business on the basis of illegally obtained information, it did not stop Chinese cybercriminals to dig deeper and steal software, source code and other data this time.
The data breach occurred in a smaller branch office in San Jose (USA) of ASML, where these cyber spies had access to corporate systems and networks for a long time (possibly years).
It is time to protect your crown jewels folks, it only takes the tiniest hole in your defenses for hackers on a mission to find what they want. Very often part of trade secrets (bill of materials, component lists, routing tasks and instructions, vendor pricing, cost pricing, customers, rebates, attached drawings - the intellectual property) is kept in ERP systems. Have a look what the SAP security solutions from agileSI™ can do for you.
